Lilium michiganense, or Michigan lily, is sometimes called Turk's Cap Lily. It is not quite so fussy about where it lives. It can be in a prairie, but it can also be in woods, fens, and at the edge of prairies. This one came up on its own near my front door, in an area my wife and I are restoring under a bur oak tree. Needless to say, this was quite a thrill.

Lilium philadelphicum var. andinum is called wood lily, but in our area it is a true prairie species. It is very conservative, occurring only in high quality prairies, most of which have been destroyed.
